Farfield are exhibiting their new product, the AnaLight® Bio200 at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in Orlando Florida, 3-6th Nov at booth 522. The AnaLight® product range is ideally suited to the study of aggregate processes so commonly found in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and nvCJD. By simultaneously monitoring, in real time, both the thickness of the peptide aggregation (amyloid in the case of Alzheimer's) and the aggregate mass, new insights into how these fundamental processes nucleate and progress can be made.

The has recently been applied to looking at inhibitor products and how they operate, clearly distinguishing between mediating in the nucleation process or the subsequent aggregation. The unrivalled sensitivity allows direct measurement of the first few seconds of aggregation rather than the end point fluorescent assays typically used, and further, by using preparations of varying hydrophobicities, surface conditions conducive to aggregation can be studied. A clear correlation of aggregation and peptide orientation has been seen which is consistent with the hydrophobic tail of the misfolded peptide inserting into the cell membrane.

The AnaLight® Bio200 is an evanescent field optical interferometer providing real time detection of proteins bound to a functionalised glass surface with simultaneous dimensional analysis of the protein layer thickness. The instrumentation provides detection limits of less than a pgrm and depth resolution of less than a carbon-carbon bond length allowing quantitative analysis of protein aggregation, folding and binding in real time.
